The Parents Library Campaign

We ask that you join hands with other parents as we work together to provide the Thrift Library with funds for excellence.

In this age of the Internet in which it seems that everything ever written is available online, or soon will be, it is important that we not forget the power of books. Unlike the Internet, a good book invites one to pick it up and examine it. It both entices the senses and challenges the mind. Not only is there a place in our library for books, but it will always be a vital and ever-growing storehouse of treasure for future generations.

Every gift of $100 places two new books in the library with bookplates honoring your son or daughter.

A gift of any amount will make a difference in the quality of education your son or daughter receives.

Helpful Tips From The Parents Council

On behalf of the Anderson University Parents Council, we would like to extend a special welcome to you as you and your student join the AU family. We hope you will enjoy your association with Anderson.

We have taken a poll of members and offer to you some helpful “freshman parent” suggestions. While not exhaustive, hopefully you will find some useful information below.

TOP 10 Freshman Parent Suggestions

  1. Check with the future roommate to prearrange who is going to bring the microwave, the TV, and the refrigerator. We found that if there was only one frig in the room, they could get away with using the next size up as both would be using it. Also, there are always too few electrical outlets in each room so they have to limit what is plugged in. They need to invest in several multi-outlet power cords with extra long cords on them.

  2. One student needs to bring a telephone with a two or more station answering machine built in so that each student can have their on telephone voice mail.

  3. 3M hooks and tapes are the best way to hang pictures, posters, and anything else on the walls. They are easy to remove and do not leave marks on the walls.

  4. Send rolls of quarters for laundry use. Replenish often.

  5. They will need a flashlight for the occasional power outages.

  6. The dorms do not supply vacuum cleaners. It they have room in their rooms somewhere, you may want to supply them with a small but strong vacuum cleaner. Once you know where they have to store it, determine whether to get an upright or canister model. Also, it is very important to show them how to empty them and change the bags, if necessary.

  7. For rooms with no carpet, carpet remnants can be purchased from local carpet stores for fairly low prices. They can be cut to fit under the furniture but please note:  this must be done before they move in as the furniture has to be moved up or out before it can be put down. It does help cut down the noise level and regulates the temperatures in the room a little better.

  8. An inexpensive DVD player is nice to have to hook up to the TV's for movie watching. Many of the kids pass around movies to watch on break times or on weekends.

  9. Please check with your student about the hours they need to graduate. Make sure they understand how many hours a semester they will need to take in order to reach this goal (and if they need to take any summer school hours). They don’t want to get to their last semester and be short of hours needed to graduate. This process needs to be figured out as new freshmen.

  10. 10. While you want to allow your student room to grow, you still want to offer them your love and support especially during that first year of college life. Send them mail and packages as often as you can – it will make the trip to the Post Office box worthwhile! Take advantage of university offers to provide exam break packages.
